Balanced Lives for Care Homes: Invitation to Meeting31st Jul 2019
Balanced Lives for Care Homes: Invitation to Meeting on 31 July 2019, 10.30 - 12.00
Action for Elders is delighted to announce that, together with our project partners, we have been awarded funding from the Healthy and Active Fund for a new project, designed to improve the health and wellbeing of care home residents.
Balanced Lives For Care Homes is an exciting new partnership project which will work within five care home communities in the Bay Health Cluster area of Swansea over the next three years. Designed to improve residents’ physical, social and mental wellbeing, it will cater for the needs of residents and local older people by incorporating gentle Tai Chi exercises with a range of meaningful social activities, facilitated by experienced practitioners. The programme builds on an evidence-based approach Action for Elders has developed over the last decade with both local and care home communities.
The project is made possible by the Healthy and Active Fund (HAF), a forward thinking, three-year initiative from the Welsh Government, Sport Wales and Public Health Wales.
The project has many elements and active partners. Action for Elders will be working with health practitioners within Bay Health Cluster Network, co-production experts at Swansea Council for Voluntary Service, and researchers at the Wales School for Social Care Research based at Swansea University. The ABM Public Health Team will play an advisory role.
Benefits to care homes of participation in the project include:
- Weekly two-hour Balanced Lives groups to be facilitated by Action for Elders, delivering benefits to residents including improved physical strength and balance, potential for fewer falls, and better mental wellbeing
- Training of staff as Champions so they can continue to support wellbeing activities between the weekly group sessions
- Opportunities to open up the programme to other older people in the community, increasing the care home’s presence and reputation in the local area.
There will be no charge to care homes for involvement in the project. However, there will be some responsibilities, including making staff available to attend the sessions and participating in research and evaluations. The opportunity is likely to suit larger homes or smaller homes willing to work together, with communal rooms which have capacity for groups of around 20-25 residents.
All care homes in the Bay Health area of Swansea are invited to attend a meeting on Thursday 31 July 2019, 10.30 - 12.00 at Gorseinon Development Trust, Canolfan Gorseinon Centre, Millers Drive, Gorseinon, Swansea, SA4 4QN, to find out more. Following the meeting you will be invited to submit a formal expression of interest and we will select five care homes to work with who best meet the criteria.
To confirm your attendance, please contact Myles Lewis on email@example.com or 07530 955433. If you’re not able to attend, or want to find out more, we’d be pleased to arrange a call with our Development Director, Anne Faulkner, who can give you more details.
